Après avoir atteint "l'Illumination", Buddha a prononçé son premier sermon ce jour, à savoir le jour de pleine lune du troisième mois lunaire. Il tombe donc à une date différente chaque année. Cette année, c'est le 9 Février et c'est un jour férié en Thaïlande, le Makha Buddha Day.

C'est un jour important pour les Buddhistes, vous vous levez tôt le matin afin d'aller donner de la nourriture au moine et vous rendez ensuite dans un temple afin d'y prier.

Et bon, pour ceux qui ne sont pas Buddhistes, c'est un jour férié particulièrement bienvenu quand il tombe le lundi.

I posted pictures of me enjoying the water in Thailand, I sure love water but I also love cold weather and the ice (ok technically it is still water ). And I can prove it, I went recently to Europe for Christmas and enjoyed going out.

I even went on a frozen lake and posted the picture in the French speaking blog .

J'étais récemment en Europe, pour Noël et Nouvel An et j'ai eu la chance de faire ce qu je n'avais jamais fait et ne pourrai jamais faire en Thaïlande, marcher sur un lac gelé.

J'ai beaucoup aimé mais bon, pas trop longtemps...

Maintenant je suis de retour à Bangkok et il fait froid aussi. Enfin c'est ce que disent les Thaïlandais, 17 deg.C à Bangkok le matin et de 2 à 10 C dans les montagnes du Nord.

Froid? On voit bien que beaucoup ne sont jamais allés en Europe en hiver.

Airport back to normal and election of the new PM tomorrow

Khun Somchai was, as expected, kicked out, not really because he did anything wrong but because some of the people in his party as well as the other parties in the government did. They bought votes at the last elections.

So on Monday we'll have the election of the new PM by the MPs from parliement and unfortunately it is quite difficult for a majority to agree about whom to elect so far, so every vote will count and a lot of deals are made in the background.

But the leader of the Democrat party, Khun Abhisit, is quite convinced it is now his turn to be PM, not because the population wants him to be PM, or he would have been elected in the first place but because he is the only one left after most of the ones who were elected were disqualified. This is democracy, Thailand style.

My mother is from Mukdahan and I go there quite often. Among things to see there is the Indochina market, next to the Mekong river. Very nice, you walk next to the river and can buy many things, many Thai and Vietnamese things. Last week was pretty cold, about 20 deg. C, the reason I'm wearing a jacket

Les vaches en Thailande

Moi je suis de la ville, enfin d'une autre ville, Bangkok.

Et je n'ai pas souvent l'occasion de voir des animaux et certainement pas des vaches, il n'y a pas de vaches à Bangkok. Mais quand je vais à Mukdahan, il y en a, en fait il y en a une pas très loin de ma maison;

Elle est peut être intéressée par moi mais je la trouve un peu trop grande pour la laisser s'approcher trop près de moi. Au cas où les vaches Thailandaises ne mangeraient pas que de l'herbe mais parfois des petits garçons...

Les 3 partis Thai représentant la majorité au pouvoir sont dissous par le tribunal, donc plus de premier ministre en Thailande. Et plus de gouvernement. De nouveau.

Comme anticipé, le tribunal a déclaré les 3 partis au pouvoir, à savoir Le People Power, Chart Thai et Matchima Thipaya illégaux pour avoir commis des fraudes durant les éléctions. Ils doivent donc être dissous et leurs membres responsables ne peuvent plus faire de politique pour 5 ans.

Et cela inclut le premier ministre Somchai qui n'est donc plus premier ministre.

Tout cela s'est passé assez calmement, pas de manifestations violentes des rouges mais des manifestations de joie des jaunes qui sembleraient avoir accepté maintenant de rouvrir l'aéroport. Cela prendra un ou deux jours pour rouvrir les accès à l'aéroport et la direction de l'aéroport espère pouvoir réouvrir pour les passagers pour le 15 Décembre (après réparations et vérifications...).

Quant aux membres des partis disparus, pas de panique, ils ont tout prévu, ayant créé un autre parti à l'avance, le Puea Thai, avec l'aide de leur mentor Khun Thaksin. Le président du parti est de la famille de Thaksin et les parlementaires déchus ont déclaré qu'ils allaient joindre le Puea Thai et donc avoir de nouveau une majorité comme avant la dissolution. Retour à la case départ.

Et de toute façon, probablement juste une tève jusque l'anniversaire du roi, ce vendredi.

Bangkok en rouge et jaune. L'affrontement des couleurs demain?

De nombreux bus enmenant des partisans du gouvernement, habillés en rouge, sont arrivés des provinces du Nord se week-end et continuaient d'arriver aujourd'hui à Bangkok. On en attendrait cent mille, probablament exagéré mais en tous cas, on les atttend nombreux.

Les anti-gouvernement, habillés en jaune, ont quant à eux décidé de quitter le siège du gouvernement qu'ils occupaient depuis quelques mois pour se regrouper dans les 2 aéroports de Bangkok, plus faciles à sécuriser.

Nous avons donc maintenant à Bangkok des milliers de personnes habillées en rouge et des milliers habillées en jaune qui sont toutes persuadées que leur couleur est celle du juste et la couleur de l'autre est celle de l'ennemi. Et la police entre les deux, pour le moment.

Mais voilà demain, un verdict du tribunal est attendu qui rendrait illégal les partis au pouvoir et donc mettrait fin au gouvernement automatiquement vu qu'ils ne pouvaient être élus si faisant partie d'un parti illégal. Et les "rouges" sont persuadés que le verdict en question est un coup d'état déguisé mis en place par les "jaunes" avec l'aide du tribunal pour se débarasser du gouvernement. Et ils considèrent cette procédure légale, illégale, et sont bien décidé à l'empêcher demain en occupant le tribunal et donc en empêchant ainsi le verdict d'être rendu.

Ils se massent donc de plus en plus nombreux près du tribunal ainsi que la police d'ailleurs et toutes les écoles des environs ont été fermées. Je remarque par ailleurs qu'aujourd'hui le traffic à Bangkok était très léger, très inhabituel en début de mois. Personne ne sortant de chez soi, s'attendant au pire.

Le festival Loy Krathong en Novembre en Thaïlande

Ce festival a eu lieu le mois passé, le jour de la pleine lune de Novembre comme tous les ans et je l'ai célébré dans mon école, paricipant à un petit spectacle beaucoup apprécié. Merci à tous

Mais pour ceux qui ne savent pas ce qu'est ce festival, c'est un des plus importants de l'année, je dirais le second plus important après Songkran. Loy veut dire "flotter" et Krathong est un petit "bateau" fait à partir d'une feuille de banane. Le jour du festival, vous allumez un bougie que vous placez sur votre petit bateau et vous l'envoyez sur l'eau, une rivière, un étang, une marre ou dans mon cas une piscine. L'important est qu'il parte sur l'eau, enmenant avec lui vos problèmes passés et vous apportant chance pour les mois à venir.

Loy Krathong Festival

For somebody who loves water as I do, the Loy Krathong festival is the second best festival of the year (the first one being Songkran).

It is celebrated on the day of the full moon in November. Loy in Thai means to float and a krathong is a small "boat" made with a banana leaf. You build one or buy one if too lazy to make it, place a candle on it, light it, and push it away on a river or a pond, asking for good luck for the months to come.

This year, I did not do not send mine on a pond or river but on a small swimming pool that was in the school I go to. There was a party and I went on stage to sing a loy krathong song, I like very much to sing.

2000 baht par jour promis aux touristes bloqués en Thailande avec la fermeture de l'aéroport de Bangkok

Le gouvernement a déclaré avoir libéré un budget de un milliard de baht afin de subvenir aux besoins des touristes bloqués en Thailande et cela à concurrence de 2000 baht par jour et par personne. Il faudrait juste montrer son billet d'avion et sa date de départ pour recevoir l'argent. Je ne suis néanmoins pas vraiment sûr des modalités pratiques, à savoir à qui exactement faut-il montrer son billet d'avion at qui va vous donner l'argent? Quoi qu'il en soit, si vous faîtes partie de ces personnes bloquéees à Bangkok, cela vaut le coup de vous renseigner auprès de vôtre ambassade, compagnie aérienne ou agence de voyages.

Cette nuit une autre grenade a été lançée sur les manifestants du PAD qui campent au siège du gouvernement, faisant 50 blessés dont 4 grièvement. Cela risque d'empirer assez rapidement, si c'est possible, le PAD oubliant, j'en ai bien peur, le fait que le gouvernement actuel a été élu démocratiquement et est toujours supporté par la majorité des habitants du Nord de la Thailande. Ceux qu'on appelle maintenant les chemises rouges (la couleur portée par les manifestants pro-gouvernement) vont se rassembler aujourd'hui à Bangkok pour protester contre ceux qu'on appelle les chemises jaunes (la couleur portée par les membres du PAD).

Et ne comptez pas sur une ré-ouverture proche des aéroports de Bangkok...

Ub des leader du PAD, Chamlong, a demandé aux manifestants du PAD qui occupent la siège du gouverneent depuis des mois de se déplacer vers l'aéroport, ce qu'ils font aujourd'hui.

La police l'avait prévu et avait placé des barrages sur toutes les routes menant à l'aéroport afin qu'ils ne puissent pas s'y rendre mais les barrages ont été enlevés ce matin, sur ordre de qui? Mystère, mais certainement sur ordre du gouvernement, ils ont limogé le chef de la police hier soir...

J'ai donc bien peur que si vous faîtes partie des 30000 passagers qui ne peuvent partir chaque jour (donc plus de 100000 maintenant) et devez absolument quitter la Thailande, je vous conseille de lire ce que j'ai écrit hier, à savoir, rendez vous à Phuket.

L'aéroport militaire de U-Tapao est maintenant aussi plus utilisé, on attend environ 50 vols par jours dans les prochains jours, mais cela ne peut aider que moins de la moitié des personnes censées quitter la Thailande chaque jour...

Ou attendez vous à rester au moins une semaine de plus à Bangkok...

L'aéroport va encore rester fermé pour un certain nombre de jours, il semblerait, donc que faire si vous voulez absolument quitter la Thailande?

Il y a quelques options:

- L'aéroport militaire the U-Tapao, utilisé pendant la guerre du Vietnam et situé près de Pattaya, donc pas trop loin de Bangkok, est maintenant proposé aux compagnies aériennes internationales comme destination temporaire pour amener les touristes ou les évacuer. Il semblerait que Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific et Malaysian Airlines vont l'utiliser provisoirement. Donc renseignez-vous auprès de la compagnie d"aviation qui a issu votre ticket afin de savoir si cette route est possible.

- Les 2 aéroports de Bangkok sont fermés mais les autres aéroports internationals de Thailande sont toujours pleinement opérationels, à savoir Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai ou même Krabi. Si vous en avez assez d'attendre, prenez un bus pour un de ces aéroports. Le problème principal est que vôtre billet d'avion n'est probablement pas valable pour un départ de ces aéroports et donc, l'agence de voyages ou la compagnie aérienne doit approuver ce changement et accepter de changer vôtre ticket.

Et si rien ne marche, profitez de ces vacances forcées...

No Coup d'Etat yesterday or today, no intervention of the police at the airport, so no way in or out of Bangkok by plane

The PAD people are making the airport their new home, bringing blankets for sleeping, blocking the highway with a firetruck and trolleys, in short preparing themselves to stay there for as long as they can.

So what should you do if you are a foreigner in Bangkok and wants to leave Bangkok?

There are a few options available:

- You can try to get a flight at Utapao airport, the military airport next to Pattaya (150 kms south of Bangkok), they said some Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific and Malaysian airlines flights will be landing there. The few seats available will sure be in high demand, so you'll need to be patient if you choose that solution

- Take a bus to Phuket, will take you the night to reach there but the airport in Phuket is fully operational and you should be able to get a flight quite easily to Singapore, if not to many other destinations

- Take a bus to Chiang Mai where the airport is also operational, it is a bit closer than Phuket but less flight available.

What would I do if I needed to leave Thailand urgently? I would go to Phuket.

As for when will the airport in Bangkok re-open? This is anybody guess but I would not count on that solution for at least a few more days, at best...

The airport is still closed and more and more people are now stuck in Thailand, some without much money left by the way.

The situation is getting really out of control and there are more and more calls for the army to intervene.

To intervene for removing the PAD people from the airport and re-open it. But well, the army won't do that, if they intervene, it will be to remove Somchai's governement and take the control of the country once again.

And this is exactly what the rumor in Bangkok is this afternoon, there will be a Coup d'Etat this evening.

I went for a day trip to Vietnam yesterday and came back in the evening, 10.20, Thai Airways flight from Ho Chi Minh City
As usual, I rushed through the customs (no queue, took less than 5 minutes) and went out through the gate 7 in order to wait for the car supposed to come to pick me up.
First impression, why is there so much noise outside, music, hands clapping, shouting, impossible to hear what the driver was trying to tell me, just two words, "wait, traffic".

I hanged up the phone but is that guy out of his mind? What traffic is he talking about? I did not even ONE car for the 5 minutes I've been waiting. But why is nobody waiting, only me, is it THAT late?

I call my Thai colleague who took his car from the parking lot and is on his way back already. "You'd better take a taxi, the entrance of the airport is closed, only a few cars going through, kms of traffic jam, you're going to wait for ages"
"Who is closing the road?"
"The PAD people and do not stand outside, you never know..."

OK, he's sure right, I will take a taxi. I move to the gate 3 where the taxis are supposed to be, I mean where the taxis have been for the last few months. No taxi. Shit.
"You've got to go the ground floor, the taxis are there" I'm told (I was on the first level , Arrival level and the PAD people were on the second level, Departure Hall).
Went to ground floor where of course, it was chaos, cars, buses, and plenty of people fighting for a few taxis that managed to come through the blockade.

Not for me, thank you, I'll wait for my car to come through, be zen...

11.30, my car came through, I jump inside and off I go. Leaving the airport, I can appreciate how lucky I am seeing kms of cars stopped on the lanes going to the airport, and people walking in between the cars, with their suitcase, trying to reach the airport in order to go back home, for thanksgiving as far as Americans are concerned. Not knowing at that time, they would still be here today, waiting.

And I'm back home, trying to stay zen about the whole mess and not writing what I really think about the PAD...

Je me suis rendu pour un jour au Vietnam hier et suis donc revenu le soir à Bangkok. L'avion attérit à 10.20 et un bus nous conduit aux douanes.

Bonne surprise, pas de files aux douanes, juste une personne devant moi, en 3 minutes j'étais dehors.

Je sors par la porte 7 comme d'habitude et à l'extérieur, personne mais un tintamarre du tonnerre. Musique et cris. Cela provenait du niveau supérieur de l'aéroport, le niveau 3 où sont situés les départs, les arrivées sont au niveau 2. OK, une fête quelconque, pas d'autre idée me traverse la tête à ce moment là. Et j'attends patiemment la voiture qui venait me prendre à l'aéroport. On me dit qu'il y a du traffic, la raison du retard, je dois juste attendre un peu. OK, du traffic mais quel traffic exactement? Je poiraute depuis 15 minutes et n'ai toujours pas vu une seule voiture???

Il est maintenant 11 h et je décide de prendre un taxi. Je me dirige donc vers la porte 3 où sont censés être les taxis et pas de taxis, pas de voyageurs, personne. On me dit de rentrer dans l'aéroport et de descendre au niveau 1. Je descends et là le chaos, des voitures, des bus, des taxis mais pas de taxis disponibles. J'attends donc une autre 1/2 h et miracle, mas voiture apparaît enfin, je monte et on est parti.

Nous nous éloignons de l'aéroport par l'autoroute et de l'autre côté, des kms de voitures arrêtées avec des gens marchant entre les voitures, tirant leurs valises derrière eux, essayant d'atteindre l'aéroport avant que leur vol parte, sans eux.

Ne sachant pas encore que tous les vols avaient été annulés et un jour plus tard le sont toujours. Ils sont donc toujours là, à attendre le bon vouloir d'une groupe d'illuminés.

J'ai une autre définition pour le PAD maintenant, People for Anarchy not Democracy (Personnes pour l'Anarchie pas la Démocratie)...

Cela arrivant la même semaine que Thaksin, après avoir divorcé, annonce qu'il avait décidé de revenir sur la scène politique Thailandaise et de se battre contre ceux qu'ils accusent de le persécuter.

I'm not too sure what is the relation in between these 2 events actually.
A few days back, UK decided that they had enough of Thaksin and canceled his visa as well as the one of his wife Pojaman. But their children can stay there, in the nice house they own in London.
Thaksin announced afterward that he will now travel most of the time and will fight for his return to Thailand. He will also probably choose as a base one of the Arab Emirates since they do not have an extradition treaty with Thailand.

And it was announced today that he also divorced because his wife did not really agree with him staying into politics. My guess would be that by divorcing, she could be allowed to stay in UK where he daughter is studying, we'll know soon enough I guess.

But the news today and what is on all TV channels in Thailand is the Royal Funeral of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, the sister of HM the King of Thailand.
It took 10 months to prepare it (she passed away in January), so we were expecting something quite elaborate and it indeed is. I'll post some youtube clips later.

Deadly teargas canisters, Preah Vihear and Cambodia, Thaksin and the PPP

I posted last week in the French version of the Thai news the youtube clip showing the damage teargas canisters could make when exploding and wondering how it was possible.

You can see people with a leg missing and 2 people were actually killed.

In fact, there was an explanation, the Thai police used old teargas bombs they bought 10 years ago in China and these Chinese bombs are indeed bombs that explode while releasing teargas, hence the extensive damage...

Las week Cambodia threatened to go to war with Thailand if they did not remove their troops from the Preah Vihear area and there was indeed some exchange of fire at the border with a few soldiers killed and it seems 10 Thai soldiers taken prisonners by the Cambodian army. The Thai army sent reinforcements, i.e. more soldiers to the area and the Cambodian government said "Now, it is ok, the Thai army withdrew, we won't go to war with them..."

Thaksin was convicted of abuse of power and sentenced to 2 years in jail, which he does not care much since he is in London. His wife on the other hand was cleared of all charges and the warrant for her arrest cancelled. And the Prime Minister Khun Somchai said the court is wrong, my brother-in -law did not do anything wrong.

And it seems the Bank of Thailand is intervening heavily in the markets to avoid a sinking of the Thai baht, which will anyway happen eventually. So why are they wasting their time and money?

We have the PPP in power, we have the PAD protesting against the PPP and now we have the UDD protesting against the PAD. Thailand Politics...

This deserves a bit of explanation.

The PPP is the People Power Party, an offspring of the TRT (Thai Rak Thai) of former Prime Minister Thaksin, no in exile in UK. When the party was dissolved and Thaksin went into exile, they created a new party called the PPP. And when the army stepped down after about one year in power, this party won the elections. Khun Samak was appointed PM and here comes the PAD...

The PAD is the People Alliance for Democracy, a very loose group of people, mainly upper middle class Bangkok who basically think elections are bad for Thailand since the electorate is not educated enough by their standards to be able to rightly choose the MPs. And they always elect the "wrong" ones, by PAD standards, that is. And it includes Thaksin and the TRT and now the PPP. They want to have 75% of the MPs not elected but nominated (by whom I'm not sure) and they call themselves People Alliance for Democracy, I guess they've got the English translation wrong... And they've been protesting for months for the removal of the PPP from power and are still occupying government house.

Now comes the UDD, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship that is on a 3 days rally in Bangkok to protest against the PAD and the reason they do that is in the name they chose for their party. They were the ones that clashed with the PAD protesters a few weeks back, leaving 1 people dead and 40 injured. They expect about 10,000 people joining and say it will be peaceful, they won't go to confront the PAD protesters.

So do you understand Thai politics better now?

But well, it still remains pretty cheap by my European standards and a lot of choices, as far as summer clothes are concerned, that is. Governor Palin would have a hard time finding clothes that suit Alaska climate here. But anyway, I do not really think she is into cheap clothes...

So, here are a few pictures I took this morning in a Tesco Lotus in Bangkok. Probably not the cheapest place, I know of a few ones that are cheaper, but how much cheaper can it be? We're talking of most clothese going from 69 baht to 299 baht, i.e. with an exchange rate of about 34 baht/US$, 2 US$ to 8 US$.

And the quality is well, worth the price...

Vu que le problème à la frontière entre la Thailande et le Cambodge, au niveau du temple de Preah Vihear ne faisait plus le titre des journaux depuis quelques temps, tout le monde pensait probablement que le problème était résolu.

Et bien non, un problème de frontière ne se résoud pas facilement, surtout dans cette partie du monde qui a des frontières arbitraires décidées par les anciennes puissances coloniales, à savoir la France et l'Angleterre.

Et donc les Cambodiens maintiennent des troupes au niveau du temple de Preah Vihear et les Thais maintiennent des troupes en face du temple de Preah Vihear.

Hier les troupes Thailandaises semblent être allées au Cambodge (version Cambodgienne) ou les troupes Cambodiennes sont venues en Thailande (version Thai) et le résultat a été pendant un court moment, des échanges de tirs et grenade blessant 2 soldats Thais et un soldat Cambodien.

Quoi qu'il en soit, la situation reste très volatile et ne sera certainement pas résolue rapidement...

For the ones who thougt the "problem" was solved, this is a reminder that border problems take very long to solve in this region, if ever.

The Thais say that some Cambodian troops came to Thailand and fired on Thai troops, wounding two soldiers who, in turn, fired a grenade on Cambodian territory wounding one Cambodian soldier.

The Cambodians say the Thais came to Cambodia and sent the grenade first.

Since they do not not agree on the border, I guess both sides are right...

Lasted less than one minute and now everything is back to normal.

Two Thai students and an Australian teacher killed by lighning in Mukdahan

Mukdahan is the place where my wife is from and where I have a house, so I'm reporting these news that unfortunately are not as uncommon as people think they are.

While they were visiting the Tad Ton waterfall, a few kms away from Mukdahan, a group of Thai students and their Australian teacher were hit by a thunderstorm, a violent thunderstorm as they always are in Thailand.

And lightning struck them, killing 2 female students, Supaporn Petcharat,14, and Atchariya Wongwai, 17, as well as an Australian tacher from Pert, Gregory Ian Crombie, 40.

2 teenage Australian students and another thai students were also injured and rushed from Mukdahan hospital intensive care unit to Ubon Ratchathani in order to be airlifted to Bangkok.

I go to Mukdahan very often and actually never visited the waterfall but this story is sure a reminder that standing next to water or just outside in the woods during a thunderstorm can be pretty dangerous...

It was dry for a few days but today the rain is back and I just love it. Rain when it is > 25 deg.C outside is always nice. My parents have to fight with me to get me back in the house

Besides that Thailand has a new government, very similar to the previous one and I'm back to school.

And I still love it and even learned a bit of Japanese with my Japanese friends. Do you know how to say "good" (as for good food) in Japanese?

But I have to say I do not say it often in the school, I just do not like the food they serve me there, I much prefer mum's food...

Mais nous allons seulement nous intéresser aux récompenses qui concernent la Thailande et cela en surprendra sûrement quelques uns, Bangkok a été votée le meilleur lieu de vacances en Asie Pacifique. Et Phuket arrive seconde.

Phuket est certainement un lieu de vacances extraordinaire mais seulement si vous aimez vous faire griller sur de magnifiques plages de sable blanc et vous baigner dans une mer aux eaux transparentes...

Si you n'aimez ni plage, ni mer, ce qui est probablement le cas d'assez bien de personnes en Asie (et donc d'assez bien de lecteurs du magazine), vour préférerez Bangkok. Beaucoup plus d'activités possibles, de l'historique avec les visites des temples et palais, à la nourriture avec des milliers de restaurants offrant une variété de plats à des prix défiant toute concurrence, en passant par les magasins et le shopping, eux aussi se comptant par milliers.

Et n'oublions pas la vie nocturne de Bangkok avec ces centaines de discos et milliers de bars, allant du plus tradionnel au plus débridé, faute de trouver un meilleur mot pour les décrire...

This is what the readers of Business Traveller Asia Pacific voted anyway.They also voted Bangkok as the second best Business city in Asia Pacific, just behind Hong Kong.

And the best resort hotels are Banyan Tree Phuket hotel first and JW Marriot Phuket Resort&Spa in thirdt place. I do not know these hotels in Phuket but if their sister hotels in Bangkok are any indication, I fully agree with them.

Phuket is only third as best leisure destination, probably because not everybody likes beaches and the sea. But if you like diving and roasting yourself on white sand beaches, Phuket wins hands down.

By the way, I also prefer Bangkok, more things to do, from temples to restaurants, discos and well, for the adventurous type, a bit of naughty night life...

Blue sky in Bangkok and the "Merchant of Death" who was the inspiration of the "Lord of War" movie is fighting his extradition to the US

Was dark and stormy when Samak was still in power and it is now blue sky with our new PM, probably just a coincidence but anyway, this week end was nice and the beginning of the week is also nice in Bangkok.

Took this picture this morning through the window of a building so that you can judge by yourself (the blue sky, not the quality of the picture that was taken with a mobile phone through a not so clean window). The river that you see on the picture is the Chao Praya river.

And the Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout known as the "Merchant of Death" and also the "Lord of War" in the movie played by Nicolas Cage, was in Court today, asking as he has asked since he was arrested 2 months ago, not to be extradited to the US.

He was arrested in the Sofitel in Bangkok, trying to sell arms to under cover agents, Thais and probably Americans. He is indicted on 4 charges of terrorism in the US but denies everything.

And the Russians do not want him to be extradited to the US but want the case to be dismissed and that he be sent back to Russia.

And the Thais do not really want to upset the Amercans, but they do not really want to upset the Russians either, so the case has been delayed and delayed and delayed, they do not seem to be able to find a good Thai compromise.

So what did happen during the hearing today? The judges held a recess and said they will consider this case later.

Inondations au Nord de Bangkok et dans le Nord Est de la Thailande, 16 morts et beaucoup de malades

Les inondations sont assez importantes à Ayutthaya et Lopburi, à environ 100 kms de Bangkok. Ainsi qu'à l'Est et au Nord Est, les lignes de chemin de fer vers Isaan étant coupées, donc pas de trains pour le moment. Une grand-mère et son petit-fils se sont noyés, portant à 16 le nombre de morts. Et beaucoup de malades, rhume, diharrée, infections par champigons...

A Bangkok, cela va mieux, toujours des nuages mais des nuages blancs, pas de pluie en vue pour le moment comme le montre cette photo prise ce matin dans le jardin de la maison où j'habite.

En ce qui concerne la situation politique, nôtre nouveau PM est en train de former son gouvernement, sans l'aide de son beau-frère à Londres, Khun Thaksin, jure t-il, déméntant les rumeurs disants qu'il avait envoyé un émissaire à Londres pour avoir l'avis de celui que le PAD considère toujours comme le "chef" du parti au pouvoir.

A vrai dire, je crois que Somchai dit vrai, pourquoi enverrait-il un émissaire chez Thaksin alors qu'il peut très bien discuter du prochain gouvernement directement avec son beau-frère, par téléphone. Ou par une conférence vidéo tenue dans son salon ou ailleurs à Bangkok.

Quant aux manifestants du PAD, ils occupent toujours les locaux du gouvernement et se réjouissent à l'avance de l'annonce du prochain gouvernement. Cela leur donnera de nouvelles idées pour critiquer et protester et donc pour insuffler un peu d'air à un mouvement qui semble singulièrement en manquer de ces jours-ci...

A lot of rain North of Bangkok resulted in the region of Ayutthaya, Lopburi,... to be under water. As well as a big part of the North East, resulting in 16 deaths so far and a lot of people suffering from diarrhoea, colds and fungi infection.

The situation in Bangkok is better, cloudy sky but white clouds, not the dark ones as the picture taken in front of my house this morning shows.

As for the polical news, Khun Somchai is lining up his cabinet ministers, without the help of brother in-law Khun Thaksin, denying the rumors saying that he sent somebody to Londond in order to discuss the choice of the ministers with our former PM in exile. I actually believe him, why should he send somebody to London to discuss the line up while he can very much do so by himself, over the phone, from the comfort of his living room?

The new government should be announced soon and the PAD protesters are eagerly awaiting that moment to put back some steam in their protests...They are by the way still occupying the government house.

Our new prime minister Somchai Wongsawat had a nice phone conversation with the leader of the PAD Sondhi Limthonkul, in between fellow Thais, so he said. At the end we're all Thais, so why should we fight? (I guess he meant we're both rich Thais, why should we fight?)

And the weather in Bangkok has become kind of London weather these days, no sun, clouds all day, and rain and rain and rain.

So much rain actually that 38 provinces in Thailand are under water and that it makes travelling to the North and North East pretty difficult and time consumming. As well as the other way round. A friend of mine came from Kon Khaen to Bangkok yesterday and it took him twice the time it generally takes him to make the trip.

It happens every year in the rainy season, the flooding, but well, maybe I'm too much influenced by all these talks about global warming, but I think it is getting worse year after year...

Khun Somchai a été officiellement nommé premier ministre par le roi de Thailande et se dit confiant de pouvoir régler trouver un terrain d'entente avec les manifestants du PAD. Ce après avoir téléphoné au fondateur du parti, Sondhi Limthongkul.

Somchai ne nous dit pas ce qui s'est dit au téléphone, juste que les discussions avaient été bonnes. Elles ont du l'être parce que, en effet, on entend plus vraiment parler du PAD de ces jours-ci.

Et la préoccupation principale dans un bonne partie de la Thailande, Nord et Est est la pluie et les inondations. Un de mes collègues est descendu de Kon Khaen vers Bangkok hier et il a pris le double du temps habituel, routes coupées par les inondations, de nombreux détours à faire.

Cela arrive tous les ans mais bon, cela est peut-être subjectif, trop influençé par les nouvelles quotidiennes sur le réchauffement climatique mais j'ai tout de même l'impression que cela empire d'une année à l'autre...

I'm repeating a bit my last posting in this blog but at least now it is official, Khun Somchai Wongsawat was elected today in Parliement by the members of his party. And since the members of his party have the majority in Parliement, he is now officially prime Minister. Khun Abhisit from the Democratic party, the only contender put up a good show, but well, only a show, his party members do not have enough seats in Parliement to be any threat to the PPP.

Final tally: Somchai 298 , Abhisit 198

Khun Somchai, we said it a few times and will probably say it again in the future is the brother in-law of the Prime Minister in exile, Khun Thaksin. He is the husband of his youngest sister, Yaopawa, who also was a member of her brother's Thai Rak Thai party and hence lost her voting rights as all her colleagues when the party was dissolved. But well, no panic, her daughter (and our new PM's daughter) is now the youngest MP in Thailand...

And Khun Somchai is 61 and looks 50 at most if the picture in The Nation is any indication

And he is said to be quite soft and not aggressive as Samak or his brother in-law could be sometimes (or often in the case of Samak), so maybe he'll be able to find a compromise with the PAD and other protesters. Let's cross our fingers...
