The goal of building the bridge in Mukdahan was to boost trade and tourism links in between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. These 3 nations signed a memoradum of understanding on August 23, 2007, to ease immigration procedures for goods crossing the borders in between the three countries.

The transport link was officially open this week and inauguration ceremonies happened simultaneously in Mukdahan, Savannakhet and Vietnam border on June 11.
